Theodor Geisel Takes a Trip

Your books (200 of them) are traveling 8,000 miles to fill the shelves of a Ugandan library, created by Connect Africa. A kid that perhaps has never seen a picture book before can now indulge in Dr. Seuss. Forty bookmarks, made by people from ages 7-17, will be distributed there. How wonderful?!

I am going to contradict myself by saying that the distance does not matter. We are finding need and filling it. We have been fortunate to donate locally, regionally, and now internationally. But the miles do not equate to impact.  We You possess something--a skill, an item, an idea, a minute that can make a positive difference. Never underestimate it.

I must now go back to the drawing board, because this was the extent of the dream for Robin Hood Reads.  Thank you for making RHR's dream come true. I pray that you continue to pursue new ones with us.

RHR's New Year's Resolution

We would like to show our utmost gratitude to you as the tally for 2012 shows 550 books collected! This surpasses expectations and only magnifies our enthusiasm. In terms of this year, many of us make New Year's resolutions that are often lofty, but motivating nonetheless. In the case of Robin Hood Reads, we have jumped on the bandwagon with an ambitious, but absolutely attainable, goal of collecting

2,013 books in 2013.

We will keep you updated on progress with the book thermometer. Robin Hood Reads appreciates your support so much and hopes that together we can innovate to make a big difference this year in children's literacy and education through the incorporation of many different people and the promotion of universal volunteerism. In the attempt to further the cause and reach more people, Robin Hood Reads now has a (young and sparse yet hopeful) twitter and Facebook which you can respectively follow and like if you desire to show your support via social media. Happy New Year!

Hot Chocolate Stand

Selling hot chocolate, fudge, and cookies this morning was lots of fun with these lovely ladies! $33 was our profit which will allow us to buy several new books. Thank you to all who stopped by to donate; we hope you enjoyed the treats! :)

High School Book Drive

The book drive at Lake Travis High School ended today with over 120 books donated in two weeks! Thank you to LTHS for your support! Also, starting January 8th, the elementary and middle schools of LTISD will be collecting children's books, so we will place bins in the front of their schools to receive those donations.

Our goal is to collect 500 books in six months, but due to the generosity of this community we are nearing our goal after only three. I am elated for the books that will be provided to the kids that we serve because a few thoughtful people sacrificed their time to make others' lives better. If this is you, thank you so much.

First Recipient!

150 books stocked the shelves of a computer room in a nearby trailer park. The kids that we met chose from the bookmarks and picked out a book to read that they can trade out whenever they please. We also met volunteers from a really cool program called Study Buddies that tutors elementary and middle school aged kids after school three days a week. Working with wonderful people such as these volunteers and kids is a prefiguration for the amazing experiences yet to come.

Other Ways to Help

If you do not have books to give, another great way to help is to make bookmarks! These will be given to the children with their book(s). A couple guidelines...

-please no words
-make it appropriate and positive
-use any medium (crayons, markers, paint, etc.) you wish on construction paper
-size wise (about 2"x8")
-have fun with it!
